Detective Language Learning Game
Detective Language Learning Game
This immersive VR language learning experience transforms English practice into an interactive detective investigation. I Designed it and developed it using Zoe Immersive SDK for Unity for English language learners, the experience uses Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT), situated learning, constructivist learning, and embodied interaction to move language practice beyond traditional vocabulary and grammar exercises.
Learners enter a virtual crime scene as detectives and solve a case by exploring their surroundings, collecting evidence, listening to NPC witness statements, interpreting idiomatic expressions, and uncovering hidden clues. Story dice introduce puzzles that require learners to connect symbols with objects and information in the environment.
As the investigation progresses, learners organize evidence on an interactive evidence board, connect witness testimony with physical and symbolic clues, and construct grammatically coherent sentences. They then use their understanding of English and the collected evidence to identify the correct suspect.
Rather than learning language in isolation, the experience makes language a tool for accomplishing a meaningful goal. Learners interpret, interact, solve problems, and make decisions within context, allowing language learning to emerge through action, reasoning, and discovery.
